| | What is the difference between Fair Trade and Ethical Trade?
In summary Fair Trade started 40 years ago in Europe. The aim was to help alleviate poverty in the Global South by giving these countries fair access to markets in the rapidly developing North. It is a trading partnership based on dialogues, transparency and respect which seeks greater equality in international trade. Furthermore it contributes to sustainable development by offering better working conditions and securing the rights of marginalised producers and workers. In short providing workers with a fair day's wage for a fair days work.
The Ethical Trade Initiative is an alliance of companies, non-govenmental organisations and Trade unions, who by using codes of practice ensures that the working conditions of workers producing for the UK market meet or exceed international labour standards. These include;
1. Non-forced labour 2. Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining 3. Safe and hygienic conditions 4. No child labour 5. Regular employment paid living wages and no excessive hours 6. No discrimination 7. No harsh or inhumane treatment!! | |
